Most teenagers would like to be popular and appear cool to their friends. We have talked to some teenagers to find out what advice they can give to other teenage boys and girls.
Kate:
I think it’s very important to find a balance. If you try to be too cool, people will see it and understand that it’s all about yourself, and not about others. Only those who behave in a really natural way can be seen as ‘cool’. Don’t worry too much about being popular, just have fun!
Jane:
A lot of girls at my school try hard to attract the attention of boys and I think it often has quite the opposite effect. I’m not saying you should appear cold and reserved as that puts most people off you, not just boys. Act naturally and think about a relationship only if you really enjoy a guy’s company, not just because he’s good-looking or popular.
David:
I can’t understand why some young people smoke, drink alcohol, or even do drugs! This stuff is not cool at all and what’s more, it causes a lot of people to think of you as a problem. Not to mention the consequences later on. It’s all right to drink the odd beer at a party, but you have to be very careful with these things.
Ben:
My advice is to socialize as much as possible! Go out and chat to people as this shows you can create friendly relationships with others. Learn to enjoy the company of other teenagers and if you have a large social circle, it is proof to other people that you’re worth spending time with.
Sarah:
I think it is really important to feel good with your body, so I advise everybody to get in good shape, especially if you’re naturally too plump or too skinny. It will boost your confidence and improve your relationships with others.
TRUE FALSE
1.Kate says you should be yourself.
2.Jane thinks girls should try hard to be popular with boys.
3.David doesn’t believe cigarettes or alcohol can make you more popular with other teenagers.
4.Ben thinks young people should spend a lot of time with each other.
5.Sarah says only plump or thin people should keep fit.
