Metoda Callana to metoda bezpośrednia (direct method) wprowadzona w 1960 roku przez Roberta Callana. Początkowo używano jej w armii, aby szybko i skutecznie nauczyć żołnierzy języka mówionego. Obecnie stosuje się ją w wielu szkołach językowych. Sposób prowadzenia zajęć faktycznie nieco przypomina wojskową musztrę. Polega bowiem na szybkim i automatycznym odpowiadaniu na pytania zadawane przez lektora. Lektor zadaje pytanie dwa razy po to, by łatwiej zapadło w pamięć uczniowi. Uczeń udziela odpowiedzi. Potem pada kolejne pytanie i kolejna odpowiedź. Każda następna lekcja rozpoczyna się powtórką przerobionego materiału i rozpoczęciem nowego. Uczniowie nie powinni zapisywać nowych slówek, robić notatek, ani dopytywać lektora o szczegóły gramatyczne czy leksykalne.
Matoda Callana uczy języka tak, jak uczy się go małe dziecko - poprzez słuchanie i powtarzanie. Gramatyki uczy poprzez wzorce zawarte w zdaniach.
Nauka podzielona jest na jednostki. Każda jednostka to stage. Jest ich 12.

STAGE 3
LESSON 25
SYLLABLE* sylaba
There are three syllables in the word “expensive” : “ex - pen - sive”, and two syllables in the word “husband” : “bus - band”.
HOW MANY SYLLABLES ARE THERE IN THE WORD “EXPENSIVE” ?
There are three syllables in the word “expensive”.
HOW MANY SYLLABLES ARE THERE IN THE WORD “HUSBAND” ?/
There are two syllables in the word “husband”.
We say “cheaper than”, but not “expensiver than”,/ because the adjective"cheap" has only one syllable, whilst the adjective “expensive” has three syllables: ex - pen -sive./ For adjectives of one syllable like “cheap, long, short etc.”,/ we say “cheap: cheaper than: the cheapest - long: longer than: the longest etc.”/ whilst for adjectives of three syllables like “expensive”, and “beautiful etc.”,/ we say “expensive: more expensive than: the most expensive - beautiful: more beautiful than: the most beautiful”.
WHY DO WE SAY “CHEAPER THAN”, BUT NOT “EXPENSIVER THAN” ?/
We say “cheaper than”, but not “expensiver than”, because
the adjective “cheap” has only one syllable, whilst
the adjective “expensive” has three syllables.
